What type of yoga is for you?

When deciding to take a yoga class it might seem daunting as to which type of class you should take.  I remember, a very long time ago when I took my first yoga class, I was extremely nervous and had no idea what to expect or which one to sign up for.

The past day one of my students expressed to me that her mother was interested in the benefits of yoga but is too nervous about what class to sign up for and who to ask.  After this question, I decided to make a little beginners guide to yoga and what types are good for beginners.

Ashtanga yoga is also referred to power yoga.  It is a fast-paced and intense style that will have you sweating.  It focuses on constant movement from one pose to another.  Although it is fast paces it does allows students to work at their own pace.

Bikram yoga is commonly referred to as hot yoga.  It is practiced in an environment where the temperature is between 95-100 degrees F.  This practice is not for the fait at heart.  It is said to facilitate cleansing of the body.  Please practice at your own discretion after research.

Hatha yoga classes are usually held at a gentle slower pace introducing the basic yoga poses.  This is a good practice for someone that doesn’t want to do vinyasa after yinyasa and wants to feel each pose.

In Iyengar yoga classes poses are held for a longer period of time.  It is meant for the student to recognize the subtleties of each posture and pay attention to every muscle being used.  I consider it like a physical therapy yoga with the use of many props.

Vinyasa yoga practice contains a bit more aggressive stretches.  This practice focuses on sun salutations and the connection of breath and movement.  It is one of the most common styles in America.

These are just a few of the most common types of yoga but there are countless others.  You can often find yoga classes focused on a specific ailment or physical states, like prenatal yoga, gentle yoga, and so many more.  If you try a class and don’t think it’s for you, I highly recommend you try a different type, you just might fall in love with it.

Yoga is meant to be a lifestyle and a way of life.  If you are new just take baby steps, see what practice feels good.  Not every style, practice, or path is right for everyone.  Do what makes your mind, body, and soul happy, see where your yoga journey could take you.
